ANACOM extends the number of spectrum lots for the 5G auction that starts in ...

ANACOM has analyzed the feedback regarding the public consultation of the 5G portfolio and has decided to extend the number of frequency lots available for the auction, scheduled for April 2020. The regulator goes ahead with the decision to stop providing for regional lots in the 2.6 GHz band, increasing the availability in national operations to 400 MHz. Another decision is that the size of each lot will go from 20 MHz to 10 MHz, thus making more lots available for auction, while increasing the flexibility of choice.

It should be recalled that the lack of spectrum was the main complaint of the major operators. In the case of Altice Portugal, the spectrum reserved for 5G would need to align with the European Union, guaranteeing each operator an amount of spectrum between 80 and 100 MHz, said Alexandre Fonseca, company administrator, during the 29th APDC Congress. “Spectrum shortage is 'the' restlessness, let us stop calendar issues,” said Filipa Carvalho, NOS Regulatory Director still in Congress, who stressed that each operator must have between 90 and 100 MHz, “at least " “To deliver the 5G we need 10 MHz in the low band, 700 MHz, and 100 MHz in the high band, 3.4 GHz,” he says.

ANACOM highlights the introduction of two bands that it considers to be pioneers for 5G: 700 MHz and the 3.6 GHz band. The first guarantees the transition in mobile network generation and coverage in different areas; The second is able to provide the capacity required for services supported on 5G systems, the regulator said in a statement.

The regulator states that the auction will also cover other ranges of interest for mobile operation: 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2.1 GHz and 2.6 GHz, explaining that these allow Portugal to benefit from facilitated and advantageous conditions in the framework. “for the consistent and competitive development of electronic communications and, in particular, fifth generation mobile connectivity”.

The decision on spectrum availability completes the first objective of ANACOM's calendar. The consultation phase follows in January and in April the approval and start of the auction, with the end of the auction expected in June next year.
