Dragon Ball Z Kakarot: The entire known universe but in an expanded world

The story we already know by heart, since SIC spent Goku's adventures in Dragon Ball Z more than 20 years ago. But Bandai Namco has made a point of reminding us, time and time again, of the different sagas in the series in their combat games, launched almost on an annual basis. After the combat game Dragon Ball FighterZ, totally focused on the confrontations between the characters, Kakarot's revelation anticipated a much more ambitious adventure, as it is an RPG based on the open world and keeping all the action that fans recognize .

In fact, Kakarot may well be the experience that was lacking in games, allowing players to explore scenarios that they know so well from the animated series created by Akira Toryama, while traveling through history again.

Despite the name, Kakarot focuses not only on Goku, but all the characters that surround him at the start of Dragon Ball Z. Players will directly control other characters like Picollo, when the narrative requires it. And even when we take over Kakarot (as his brother Raditz calls him when he arrives on Earth), we can have a group of up to three companions who will serve as support during the fighting.

The adventure starts with a tour of Goku and his son Gohan, which serves as a tutorial for exploration mechanics, setting the map, items to collect and even mini-games like fishing. For those who don't know, Goku always fished with his tail, and even after losing it, he keeps an artificial one in his pocket, because the fish "bites" anyway … And as soon as Chi Chi calls for dinner, Goku jumps to his cloud Nimbus to explain how it is possible to fly across the skies of the world, not only with vehicles, but without them.

The game follows the events in step with the animated series, from the first saga of the Super Sayans, which begins with the arrival of Raditz, who is actually the first big boss of the adventure. The narrative is being told through quests, but there are other side missions and activities that you can choose to complete first, giving the characters more experience and items to face the most powerful enemies.

Combat is the essence of the Dragon Ball Z universe, and CyberConnect2 didn't make it easy, putting all its experience to create the mandatory scale and intensity of the action. The studio debuts in the universe, but presents almost 20 games based on the Naruto Shippuden universe, as well as the award-winning Asura's Wrath.

When you encounter enemies, the combat mode is activated and the scene you are in turns into a huge combat arena, which allows complete freedom of movement. The studio opted for simplicity in basic attacks, assigned to a single button, but then forces it to combine with defense and “dodge” to obtain quick counterattacks. The dodge maintains the character's style, authentic teleports to the enemies' backs. Then it is to manage the power bar, activating the special skills that the characters learn during the adventure, like the mythical Kamehameha and the Spirit Bomb of Goku, for example. And if you have other characters in the group, they act automatically, but you can give instructions for specific attacks, in a very simple interface.

Bonyu is a new character created by Akira Toryama for the game.

Dragon Ball Z Kakarot promises many hours of fun and exploration, as well as very intense and challenging battles against the main bosses of the saga. It will be an opportunity to relive the great sagas of the series and still meet the exclusive character that Toryama created for the game: Bonyu, an elite warrior from the guard of Frieza. The game is in stores on PC, PS4 and Xbox One versions.
