True, looking at the sky and gazing at the stars at night is a hobby for many, but have you ever wondered what mysteries lurk in the nightly landscapes of our planet? Even before the end of the year, NASA has compiled over 150 Earth night images captured over the past 25 years in a special ebook.
The images in “Earth at Night” demonstrate how natural phenomena, from volcanic eruptions to aurora borealis, as well as human activity illuminate specific areas of the planet, contrasting starkly with night darkness. The photo on the ebook's cover is part of the latest version of the global night map, made from observations recorded throughout 2016, with the help of the National Polar-orbiting Partnership (NPP) satellite. The last map had been presented in 2012.
According to Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator of NASA's Science Mission Directorate program, quoted in press releaseThis work is aimed not only at those who study the phenomena on our ever-changing planet, but also at decision makers in areas such as sustainable energy use and disaster response, whether natural or man-made.
Explorers of the exploration of the earth's mysteries can find NASA's ebook at page dedicated to "Earth at Night", with MOBI, EPUB and PDF versions available.
