Imagine having the most famous video games of two decades in your country on stamps. The British could be lucky after the UK Royal Mail Postal Service announced Tuesday the release of special stamps celebrating British video games in the 1980s and 1990s. Classics such as Worms, Lemmings, Wipeout, Tomb Raider and Sensible Soccer are part of the stamp collection, which will go on sale later this month.
The collection features four Tomb Raider seals, revealing the adventures of Lara Croft over the years. A variety of game consoles are also represented, such as BBC Micro, ZX Spectrum, Commodore Amiga, and Sega Mega Drive.
In interview to a British television, head of postal service strategy Philip Parker says "the UK has been at the forefront of the video game industry for decades" after a successful struggle. “In the 1980s and 1990s, young designers came across the coding of the new microcomputers and set the model for the iconic gaming industry.” “We celebrate some of their outstanding stamp creations,” he says.
The special stamp collection will be available from January 21st in the UK, but in official site Royal Mail accepts pre orders from other countries, Portugal included. But note that only 2,500 units of each, individually numbered, are available.
As a curiosity, the project was conducted by Bitmap Books, whose responsible for the screenshots used in the stamps is Portuguese Gonçalo "Shiryu" Lopes.
